Mich. cop's good eye leads to escapee's arrest

ROMULUS, Mich. — A good eye by a police officer on routine patrol led to the capture of a Mecosta County Jail escapee while the suspect drove through Romulus on Sunday.

Romulus Police officer Derek Turner spotted 36-year-old Jonathan Good in a stolen car near Ecorse and Hannan roads at 12:45 p.m. Sunday, Romulus Lt. John Leacher said today.

“The officer saw the car they were looking for and pulled him over,” Leacher said.

Good, who was in jail on charges of robbery, attempted murder and kidnapping, escaped through a jail skylight in northern Michigan late Wednesday.

He had a relative in Romulus who he contacted before the arrest but it’s unclear if it was the relative who tipped off police. Police say he was driving a vehicle that was stolen from Mecosta County around 6 a.m. Sunday.

Sgt. Joe Cairnduff of the Michigan State Police said Good spent a couple of days in the Big Rapids area before he stole the car Sunday morning.

No one has been charged with assisting Good, who was taken back to Mecosta County Sunday afternoon, Leacher said.

Cairnduff said there is no indication that Good planned to flee the area on a plane. Romulus is home to Detroit Metropolitan Airport and about 150 miles southeast of Mecosta County.
