London — A German Shepherd named Visco who helped in making an incredible 142 arrests in 2012 has been named Britain's best police dog.

Visco and his handler constable Matt Holding detained at least one criminal for Staffordshire Police every three days, the Daily Mail reported.

The duo was formed in 2009 after Visco was brought from Germany. Visco will be five years old in February 2013.

The German Shepherd lives at the home of dog support unit inspector Chris Dawson and his partner Jo Willis, who is also a dog handler.

Visco and Holding work shift patterns of six days on, four days off in one of the most successful police dog support units in the country.

The dog unit also consists of 12 specialist dogs, trained to search for a variety of substances. So far this year, the unit has carried out 365 searches for drugs, firearms and cash.

Holding and Visco were awarded the Divisional Commendation Award for their good work, continued excellent performance, motivation and achievement.
