In 1985 I attended my first Calibre Press Street Survival Seminar in Rosemont, Illinois, taught by two guys named Dave and Dave. I paid for it myself because I’d read the book “Street Survival” and I had heard so much about this unique training experience that frankly, I wanted to see if reality matched the hype. I was a young narc living the law enforcement adventure I’d been dreaming of since junior high school, and I viewed myself as a pretty safe, forward-thinking cop. However, at the end of those two action-packed days I walked out of that seminar thinking to myself “there’s a whole lot I need to change about the way I’m doing police work or I’m gonna get hurt!” Nearly two decades later I found myself up in front of my peers, teaching that very same seminar with a cadre of instructors lead by Dave Smith, one of the two “Dave’s” who had originally inspired me to not only improve my own officer safety, but to teach and preach it to others. Over thirty one years after its humble beginning, the “Street Survival” seminar is going strong, and like the law enforcement profession itself, we are still learning, growing and changing with the times. Two days ago, on June 28, 2011, Calibre Press and PoliceOne unveiled our best, most exciting, most comprehensive “Street Survival” seminar ever, and nobody is more excited about it than me and my fellow instructors. Late last year when we decided to undertake this extraordinary makeover, there was trepidation all around. How do you begin to improve something that has a 30-year history of incredible success? Frankly, we didn’t want to end up becoming the “New Coca Cola” of the police training world, angering everyone who loved the “original formula” and confusing everybody else. So we did what Chuck Remsberg and Denny Anderson did in the very beginning, we asked you. We consulted with not only industry experts, but street cops, trainers, managers, investigators, correctional officers, rookies, dispatchers, prosecutors, spouses, partners and even students. We wanted to know what you needed to learn from a “Street Survival” seminar to make you a better, safer cop and a stronger, more resilient person right now. Related Feature:

After gathering facts, figures, and an extraordinary amount of new information, we sequestered ourselves in Dallas for three days armed with laptops, notepads, and gallons and gallons of coffee and drafted the outline for what would become a new era of “Street Survival.” But the hard work was just beginning. One of reasons for the early success of the “Street Survival” seminar was its unique delivery. No one had access to the films, photographs and first-person stories that Remsberg and Anderson did, and fortunately, these men were willing to share all that they had and more with the law enforcement community, as were their first police instructors, Dave Smith and Dave Tracy. We wanted to be as unique in 2011 and beyond as “Street Survival” was in 1980, so we turned to the award-winning video unit at the PoliceOne Academy. The recently-released Academy is full of unique training segments, reenactments, and survivor stories that can only be obtained through Police One. We combined the power of the Police One dynasty with the experience of our research staff and technical experts to create a training experience like no other, and the result is a completely refreshed “Street Survival” seminar designed to make you harder to kill. Calibre Press also recognizes that many of our “Street Survival” attendees pay their own way and that everyone joining us at the seminar is not only a customer, but a friend and a fellow professional, so we’ve enhanced the entire seminar experience to make it an “event,” not just a training class. Internationally recognized sponsors and vendors are on hand to interact with attendees and provide them with products, services and information beyond the “Street Survival” experience. We’ve also greatly expanded our own line of “instructor-recommended” books, clothing and products, and we’ve brought in a new group of enthusiastic, well-trained service specialists, and the entire staff works together to help you get the most out of your two days with us. The updated “Street Survival” seminar will continue to enhance your mental preparation for this very difficult, but rewarding profession. We will continue to tell the stories of our fallen heroes; we will honor them by remembering their sacrifices and learning from them. You’ll also hear tales of incredible courage, perseverance, and strength, very often from the warriors themselves. We’ll provide information on issues, tactics and concerns not only for street cops, but investigators, dispatchers, military police, correctional officers, and anyone in the law enforcement profession. We’ve also added more information for the spouses, partners and parents of our attendees, who are invited to join us at the seminar for a significantly reduced rate. At Calibre Press and PoliceOne we are passionate about fighting “the war on cops” in this nation and beyond, and one of the best way to do that is to arm you with the finest training and information available. Whether you’ve never been to Street Survival or you’ve been to twenty of them, beginning this month, we promise a training experience like no other. I hope to see you soon!
