LAKELAND, Fla. — An officer suffered life-threatening injuries after being shot on duty, authorities said.
Officer Arnulfo Crispin, 25, radioed Sunday night that he was near an apartment buildling checking on a complaint of suspicious activity involving three suspects, according to the Palm Beach Post. When backup officers arrived, they found Crispin shot and "unresponsive," police spokeswoman Ann Dinges said.
Crispin was immediately transported to a local hospital for emergency surgery, and a manhunted ensued involving more than 12 law enforcement agencies. Kyle Williams, 19, was arrested.
"We are certain we have the right individual in custody," Chief Lisa Womack said at a news conference Monday. No other suspects are being sought.
According to the latest report, Crispin's condition is very critical to grave. Police and family members have been visiting Lakeland Regional Medical Center in a steady stream to visit the officer and offer condolences.
Crispin's colleagues "are absolutely devastated," Womack said, adding that Crispin represents the department well and does oustanding work.
