Video: Cruiser’s head-on collision ends pursuit

The officer stopped pursuit to call dispatch when the suspect turned around to ram the cruiser

By PoliceOne Staff

MORAINE, Ohio — Riverside police released the dash cam footage of a pursuit that ended when a truck hit a cruiser head-on.

When an officer tried pulling over Benjamin Baker, 20, for a minor traffic violation, the suspect took off in his Dodge Ram, according to Dayton Daily News.

Riverside Police Chief Mark Reiss said the officer initially did not follow Baker, according to department policy.

He said the officer had turned his cruiser around and alerted dispatchers that the vehicle had fled, but Baker drove back and attempted to strike the officer’s cruiser.

“At that point… he’s made an effort to intentionally, unprovoked, ram a police officer,” Reiss said, and the officer was correct in pursuing him.

With speeds reaching 50 mph, the pursuit spread across five cities Friday night, the article stated.

Baker’s truck lost a tire and stopped, before accelerating again and ramming the Riverside cruiser.

The veteran officer in the cruiser was transported to a hospital with minor injuries and is expected to make a full recovery, according to the article.

Baker is facing possible charges of felonious assault, resisting arrest and operating a vehicle while intoxicated. His bond has been set at $4,500.
