Suspect shot dead robbing off-duty Calif. officer

The officer told police that he was the victim of an attempted armed robbery, and shot the man fearing his own safety

CORONA, Calif. — A 41-year-old San Bernardino man was shot to death Sunday night, Jan. 13, when he tried to rob an off-duty police officer, Corona police said Tuesday.

The shooting happened about 8 p.m. in the 1200 block of Kendrick Court, a residential neighborhood in Corona near Santiago High School.

Corona police Capt. Thomas Weeks said the officer does not work for the city. Weeks declined to identify the agency that employs the officer, citing safety reasons.

A news release said the officer told police that he was the victim of an attempted armed robbery. Fearing for his safety, he drew his concealed weapon and shot the man, whom the San Bernardino County coroner identified Monday as Dushine James Smith.

Unidentified people drove Smith in a private vehicle to Kaiser Permanente Medical Center Hospital in Fontana, where he died at 9:58 p.m.

Smith does not have a criminal record in San Bernardino, Orange or Riverside counties, according to online court records.

Corona police declined to release additional information on Smith or the incident for now.
