MIDDLEFIELD, Ohio — Police have released dramatic dash cam video of the shoot-out between officers and a suspect during a routine traffic stop.

On March 10, Officer Brandon Savage and Officer Erin Thomas pulled James L. Gil Gilkerson over while on patrol.

Before they could exit their cruiser, police say the man got out of his car and fired at the officers.

Officers then exited their cruiser and returned fire, killing Gilkerson.

Officer Thomas was shot in the hand. She was taken by a University Hospitals MedEvac helicopter to MetroHealth Medical Center.

Officer Savage was hit in the leg by shrapnel and was taken to University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center for treatment.

Both officers have since been released from the hospital.

Back in April the officers, along with those who responded to their aid, were recognized for their courage and commitment to protecting the Middlefield community.
