Officers returned fire but couldn't confirm if the suspect was hit

By PoliceOne Staff

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, N.C. — A detective was wounded Thursday night when he and another officer with the Gang Task Force tried approaching a suspicious man to speak with him, and the man opened fire, striking the officer in the leg.

Detective Michael Spencer and another officer saw the suspect exiting a car and as they approached, he saw them and opened fire.

Officers returned fire, but it wasn’t clear if the suspect was wounded as he fled, according to the Star News.

Spencer underwent surgery for his wound and is expected to recover.

The driver of the vehicle the suspect exited was detained and released, according to the report.

A manhunt ensued for the gunman, whom police describe as a black male, between 5 feet 8 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing 215 to 230 pounds and wearing a black hoodie, dark jeans and a knit cap.

Police say he is armed and dangerous.
