BRIDGETON, N.J. — An off-duty Bridgeton police sergeant was killed early Saturday in a single-vehicle crash in Pittsgrove Township, police said.

Christopher L. Blackburn, 38, was a 12-year veteran of the department who was promoted to sergeant in 2008, said Capt. Michael A. Gaimari, in a written statement.

According to the State Police, Blackburn was driving a red 2006 Ford Explorer on County Road 540 at 12:43 a.m. when he lost control of the vehicle for unknown reasons and struck a utility pole. The investigation is ongoing.

Gaimari said Blackburn, who previously served as a K-9 officer, was also president of the police union's Superior Officers Association.

"He will surely be missed and remembered fondly by all who had the opportunity to work with him," he said.
