Video: Texas man fleeing police nearly runs cop over

Garland Shattuck swerved to avoid a spike strip, nearly running over an officer

By PoliceOne Staff

TYLER, Texas — When police attempted a traffic stop of a man who was off his medications, the man took off, eluding police at speeds of up to 114 mph before almost hitting an officer and eventually surrendering.

A coworker of Garland Wayne Shattuck’s called police to warn them that Shattuck was off his medications and acting strange. When police tried stopping his vehicle to check on him, he sped off, according to KLTV.

Police laid down a spike strip to end the pursuit, prompting Shattuck, 57, to swerve off the road, just missing an officer standing on the side of the road.

“After he aimed his car at the trooper, over on 49, this was bad, real bad,” said Precinct 3 Cherokee County Constable Eddie Lee. ”He had no concern for anyone else’s life.”

After 40 minutes, Shattuck pulled over and exited his vehicle with his hands up, according to the report.

He was taken to a Tyler hospital, but was later released and booked into the Smith County Jail for evading arrest or detention with a prior conviction. His bond is set at $2,000.
