AUSTIN, Texas — Last month, Detective Alexander with the Austin Police Department was working a traffic assignment shooting laser radar on Research Blvd. when his police unit was struck by a driver.

Corporal David Boyd with Austin P.D. says witnesses saw the person behind the wheel driving recklessly.

"The assignment that he was working was looking for speeding vehicles, aggressive drivers, you know, this one happened to find him in a different way. The laser didn't get him, he came directly to the detective. So it's just not a pleasant thing to happen but luckily nobody really got seriously hurt out of it, nobody was killed," Boyd said. Detective Alexander was not seriously injured.

According to statistics from the FBI, there were 47 law enforcement officers accidentally killed in 2012. Twenty-two of those officers were killed in car accidents. Ten of the 47 were struck by vehicles.
