LOS ANGELES — A man suspected of shooting at officers responding to a domestic dispute and injuring one was found dead Monday after a four-hour standoff in a Hollywood Hills home, police said.

It isn't clear if the suspect died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound or was injured earlier during a police shootout, said Sgt. Barry Montgomery.

Officers responded to the call shortly after 8 a.m. on a residential street near Laurel Canyon. As they tried to contact the resident, shots were fired at them and they returned fire, police said.

An officer was struck by shrapnel or debris during the exchange of gunfire.

Officer Wendy Reyes said the officer, who is assigned to Hollywood station, is being treated at a hospital for injuries that aren't life threatening.

The suspect holed up inside the multi-story, single-family home. After roughly four hours, SWAT officers entered the home and found the suspect dead inside. The incident was under investigation.

Police Chief Charlie Beck posted a message on Twitter saying the injured officer was doing well.

"Spoke with our wounded officer. Thankfully she is doing well. Please keep her & our officers in your thoughts & prayers," he tweeted.
