DALLAS — An off-duty Dallas police officer was killed in a motorcycle crash Wednesday afternoon in Ellis County, according to police.

Senior Corporal David Myers, 56, was headed north on West Road around 1:40 p.m and was crossing a wooden bridge at the time of the accident, Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Trooper James Colunga said.

Colunga said for some unknown reason, Myers lost control of the motorcycle while traveling over the bridge, went over the right side, landing in the creek bed below.

He said Myers died at the scene. The creek bed is about 11 feet below the bridge, according to Colunga.

Myers lived in Waxahachie and joined the department in 1986.

"Senior Corporal Myers was a 27 year veteran of the Department and was assigned to the Traffic Section," Dallas police said in a prepared statement.  "Our hearts and prayers goes out to his family and friends."

The Dallas Police Association tweeted condolences to his family.
