BROOKLYN — An officer and a gunman are being treated for gunshot wounds following a shootout early Sunday morning in Brooklyn.

Plainclothes officers approached a man after seeing the suspect adjust his waistband, as if carrying a firearm.

As police approached, according to the New York Times, the suspect, later identified as Naim Owens, took off running.

He approached two more officers on foot patrol and opened fire, hitting Officer John Hirschberger, 28, in the thigh.

Other officers returned fire, striking Owens twice in the back, according to the report.

Owens was apprehended and charged with attempted murder, assault on a police officer and criminal possession of a weapon. He is in critical condition.

Hirschberger was treated for his injuries and released.
