Utah SWAT shoot armed man after standoff

SALT LAKE CITY — An apparently suicidal man shot by a Salt Lake County sheriff's deputy Saturday evening was in serious condition after undergoing surgery.

Drivers called 911 to report that a motorist had jumped a curb and nearly hit a pedestrian at 11844 S. Lampton View Dr. (1080 West) Saturday, Jaroscak said. That driver, later identified as Nystrom, drove to a home at 1061 W. Windchime Circle (19930 South).

At the home, Nystrom allegedly fired a .40-caliber weapon into the ground, authorities said. Nystrom's son was later able to wrestle the weapon from his father, police said.

SWAT members then engaged in standoff with Nystrom, who had obtained .48-caliber revolver from inside the home, Jaroscak said.

"When he came out a side door of the garage, he was confronted with members of the SWAT team," Jaroscak said.

A SWAT officer Tasered Nystrom, who dropped his gun as he fell to the ground, Jaroscak said.

"He came to very quickly and reached for the gun and the shooting occurred," he said. "There was one shot."

Jaroscak was unaware if the deputy involved in the shooting was placed on leave, which is the typical procedure, he said.
