Standoff in Utah ends with Calif. suspect's suicide

After leading UHP on a chase, a Calif. man suspected of killing his ex-wife barricaded himself inside his green Saturn Vue

BEAVER, Utah — A three-hour standoff ended Wednesday when police found a California murder suspect dead inside his vehicle on a Utah interstate.

Police sought Russell Scott Goldberg, 49, in connection with the death of his ex-wife, whose body was found in her Redondo Beach apartment early Wednesday, KSL reported. California authorities said the killing was violent and believed Goldberg to be armed and dangerous.

Family members said Goldberg had no friends or relatives in Utah and was likely passing through when a trooper spotted his car, according to the Salt Lake Tribune. He refused to pull over, and after leading troopers on a chase, barricaded himself inside his green Saturn Vue.

The Saturn sat in the road for three hours until SWAT approached and found Goldberg alone in his vehicle, dead.

"We were able to get to the vehicle, and he had committed suicide," Beaver County Sheriff Cameron Noel said.

The Utah Highway Patrol closed the interstate in both directions and called a Department of Public Safety helicopter to assist during the standoff.
