Officials see links in in N.J., Texas rescue hoaxes
Similarities in the two calls weeks apart have prompted the Coast Guard Investigative Service in New York to suspect a connection

In both distress calls, the voice and language were alike.
Each vessel was "taking on water," not sinking. The people on board were described as "souls," and in each case, the caller referred to an automatic signaling "beacon" in orange life rafts.
Similarities in the two calls weeks apart — involving a vessel off New Jersey and another off Texas, and now deemed to be hoaxes — have prompted the Coast Guard Investigative Service in New York to suspect a connection, officials said Wednesday.
