W.Va. man flips off sheriff, crashes car

UPI

CHARLESTON, W.Va.- A West Virginia motorist flipped the bird to the Kanawha County sheriff, promptly drove into a guardrail and was arrested for drunken driving.

Glenn Harold Vickers, 53, of South Charleston, W. Va., was arrested Thursday night a short way from the scene of the crash, the Charleston (W.Va.) Daily Mail reported Friday.

Sheriff Mike Rutherford was driving home from a County Commission meeting when Vickers' station wagon began weaving into his lane, the newspaper said.

The suspect tailgated Rutherford's unmarked black Jeep and crowded his bumper three times, the sheriff told the newspaper.

"I thought he was going to ram me," the sheriff said this morning. "He'd come right on my bumper, then he would just back off."

When the two vehicles approached an interstate exit, Vickers extended his middle finger in the sheriff's direction and crashed into the guardrail.

"There's no question in my mind he was not paying attention," Rutherford said. "When he was stopped and I introduced myself, you could tell he was surprised. It was like all the air was taken out of him."
