N.H. cruiser sold on popular Web site

By Shira Schoenberg
The Concord Monitor

CONCORD, N.H.— The popular website is often a clearing house for apartments or cheap furniture. But the Deering Police Department recently used the site for a different purpose: to sell a broken- down police cruiser.

The 2002 Crown Victoria police cruiser, with about 126,000 miles on it, had severe electrical problems that kept it from running. Estimates to fix it were well over $1,000.

Voters at this year's town meeting approved a warrant article to buy a new cruiser. But instead of paying someone to tow the old cruiser to the state auction in Concord, the department decided to list it on Craigslist.

"Craigslist doesn't cost anything," Pushee said. "I figured I'd put it out there and see what happened."

Pushee's strategy worked. A Nashua man bought the cruiser for $1,000. Pushee said he believes the man intends to fix it up and use it as a taxi.
