Calif. police give drivers the bird at sobriety checkpoint

USA Today

Sober drivers spent last night searching for the police checkpoint in Salinas, Calif., where officers were handing out free frozen turkeys to anyone who wasn't driving while impaired.

"The goal is to deter drunk driving, promote sober driving and provide families in need with free turkey," Sgt. Richard Soratos tells The Salinas Californian, a fellow Gannett newspaper.

His department planned to hand out 300 frozen birds, according to the paper.

Like the Salinas Police Department, law-enforcement agencies across the USA are ramping up for the holidays, with more officers patrolling highways and manning sobriety checkpoints in search of drivers are intoxicated.

MADD says impaired drivers kill about 1,000 people each holiday season. New York's DMV reports that a "driver with a BAC of 0.08 is four times as likely to cause a crash as a driver who has not been drinking, while a driver with a BAC of 0.16 is 25 times as likely to do so."

What's your BAC, or blood alcohol content? This police department's website has a BAC calculator.
