Video: Australian police chase runaway goat

Witness: 'Given the vicinity of the zoo it was a good thing that it was a goat and not a lion'

ABC Premium News

MELBOURNE, Australia — A baby goat has been caught after creating traffic disruptions in Melbourne's inner north earlier today.

Police slowed traffic to a crawl on Royal Parade while the kid ran towards Elliot Avenue in Parkville, not far from the Melbourne Zoo.

Witness Michael Ott says drivers were pretty surprised.

"[I] started seeing police vehicles and police on pushbikes and things. I thought it might have been a bit of a manhunt at first," he said.

"Then I saw some ranger or it might have been personnel from the zoo running with nets, which was a bit interesting."

He said the goat narrowly missed being hit.

"Then a little goat ran across Royal Parade through the traffic in front of me," he said.

"People were pretty shocked I guess it's not something that you expect to see, a goat moving around.

"I guess given the vicinity of the zoo it was a good thing that it was a goat and not a lion."

The zoo says it is not one of their animals.

The kid has been capture in parkland east of the Melbourne Zoo, and has been taken to the Lost Dogs Home where it will be checked over by a vet.
