Video: Off-duty officer steps in during iPhone attack

The victim of a stolen phone decided to take the matter into his own hands

By PoliceOne Staff

SAN DIEGO — A man who lost his iPhone decided to take the matter into his own hands, tracking down the phone thief and beating him on camera.

Kenneth Schmidgall and his friend, Greg Torkelson, used the ‘Find My iPhone’ app, which uses GPS to track the phone’s signal, until the two men came across a man riding a bike, according to ABC 10 News.

Schmidgall deployed pepper spray and attempted to make a citizen’s arrest. A fight quickly ensued between Schmidgall and the alleged thief, when a man claiming to be an off-duty police broke it up and stood watch until police arrived, according to the article.

"Hopefully, he won't try this again and that anybody else out there that's seen the video or is watching the segment will also think twice before stealing somebody's phone,” said Torkelson.

Torkelson believes the alleged thief was taken into custody for outstanding warrants from separate incidents. Police have not yet been able to confirm that.
