Video: Daytona police kill 10-foot alligator

The gator was in a retention pond in a neighborhood with small children, so police took immediate action

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — An alligator found in a retention pond was shot three times by an officer Friday as neighbors looked on.

The alligator was in a retention pond in a residential area of Daytona Beach where children play.

Officials think the animal got in through a storm water drain.

A witness called officers when she saw kids poking the 10-foot alligator with a stick.

When the officers arrived, the gator put up a fight.

"He started flipping over and coming over at the officers," witness Courtney Smith said.

An officer shot the alligator three times before it stopped thrashing.

Multiple officers worked to pull the gator from the pond. Florida Fish and Wildlife officers hauled the animal away.

An investigation is now underway because the officer fired at the animal, which is procedure.
