Position Title: POLICE RANGE OFFICER

Job Description
The employee is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Alexandria Police Department's firing range and maintaining the facility in a safe and efficient condition for training and officer safety. The Range Manager is responsible for ensuring that sworn law enforcement officers and recruits are properly trained in the use of all City owned firearms and that they obtain and maintain certification as described in the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Service Standards and mandatory in-service requirements. The Range Manager is also responsible for scheduling, maintaining accurate records, inspection and repair of weapons, preparing Range budget and purchasing supplies and equipment when necessary. Performs weekly and monthly Range maintenance. One-year experience as a certified firearms instructor; possession of a high school diploma or equivalent GED and completion of firearms safety courses. Must currently be certified as a General Instructor and a Firearms Instructor, and must have an Armor certification for weapons repair at the time of appointment. Must possess a valid driver's license and maintain all mandatory state certification requirements. Knowledge of the laws and regulations regarding firearms and police training and of pertinent Departmental and State laws and ordinances. Skilled in use and knowledge of various firearms. Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing as well as establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers.

Additional Information
This is a Civilian position, the incumbent must have certification for weapons repair at the time of appoitment.

  • Experience At least one-year experience as a certified firearms instructor
  • Additional Requirement :

    One-year experience as a certified firearms instructor; possession of a high school diploma or equivalent GED and completion of firearms safety courses; or any combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

    The employee must possess certification as a General Instructor and a Firearms Instructor, and must have an Armor certification for weapons repair at the time of appointment. Employees must maintain all mandatory state certification requirements. The employee must possess a valid driver's license issued by the State of their residence.
