Job Description

Identifies trends and patterns in the occurrence of crime and law enforcement activity within Ada County; prepares and distributes a variety of reports on crime, jail incidents, staff workload and law enforcement activity; develops and maintains monthly reports, maps and graphics; performs related duties as required. Maintains communication between different sections within the Sheriff’s Office on a daily basis. The position is located in the Planning and Research Unit.

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Produces reports on crime patterns, jail incidents, staff workload and other law enforcement activity for use by various sections of the Sheriff’s Office;

· Receives requests for queries and determines how to structure requests;

· Designs and runs various queries of the Sheriff’s Office information systems to produce special reports on personal computers and the county's mainframe computer;

· Produces a variety of maps, graphs, charts, and data analysis for various sections of the Sheriff’s Office and other personnel and organizations as needed;

· Processes data from a variety of sources, interprets data, and communicates the key information to various sections of the Sheriff’s Office as needed;

· Maintains and disseminates monthly reports of critical law enforcement activity;

· Maintains partnerships with various sections of the Sheriff’s Office to remain informed and educated on policy and operational changes to ensure accuracy of analysis and reports;

· Attends meetings as needed;

Job Requirements

  • Experience Less than 1 Year
  • Additional Requirement :

    Bachelor’s degree in Police Science, Criminal Justice, Sociology, Psychology, or a related research field with coursework in computer sciences, statistics, and sociology or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred;
    Knowledge of the general operation of a law enforcement agency and the basics of the criminal justice system;
    Knowledge of personal computers, data entry, data analysis, databases, spreadsheets, graphical software, and query procedures; experience with SPSS or SAS a plus;
    Knowledge of the principles and methods of predictive statistics or analysis of trends and patterns;
    Skill in solving problems relating to crime and law enforcement activity and in determining what information is requested;
    Skill in creating maps, charts and graphs which illustrate patterns;
    Skill in communication and the operation of a computer terminal;
    Ability to prepare clear, concise and complete reports;
    Ability to determine where and how requested information can be obtained;
    Ability to quickly and efficiently enter data into and retrieve data from computers including writing and using query applications;
    Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, law enforcement personnel, and the public;
    Ability to quickly communicate information verbally in briefings; and
    Ability to work independently.

    OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

    Must be at least 18 years of age;
    Must pass an oral examination, polygraph examination, credit and background check prior to hire.
    WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    · Work is performed primarily in an office environment and the employee in this class is subject to inside environmental conditions;

    · May be required to lift up to 20 lbs.;

    Requires sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, which permits the employee to function in a general office environment to accomplish tasks.
    Preference in appointment will be given to eligible veterans.

    **Due to the Sheriff's Office’s attempt to create a relatively smoke-free environment for those employees who choose not to smoke because of their growing concern for their health and welfare, applications from those who have not smoked will be considered for employment. Applicants must have not smoked any tobacco products for at least 11 months prior to applying.
