Interim police chief named for troubled Conn. town

EAST HAVEN, Conn. — The mayor of East Haven, Conn., has announced the appointment of an interim police chief to head a department tainted by charges of false arrests and other forms of harassment against Latino residents.

Mayor Joseph Maturo said Monday that Brent Larrabee brings a career of experience for community-oriented and progressive public safety practices in diverse communities. He has served as police chief in Stamford and Framingham, Mass.

The mayor says Larrabee put in place neighborhood policing and established community coalitions in Stamford.

Larrabee says he will help strengthen confidence in policing and bring a standard of excellence to East Haven.

FBI agents arrested four officers Jan. 24 on criminal charges that they violated Latinos' rights through false arrests and unnecessary searches. The officers have pleaded not guilty.
