Seattle officer intervenes in fight, combatants turn on him
By Casey McNerthney

SEATTLE — A Seattle police officer was rushed to Harborview Medical Center Tuesday night after three teens attacked him, repeatedly punching and kicking his face.
The 35-year-old officer, who works in the Southwest Precinct, is expected to recover from what department spokesman Jeff Kappel described as "serious injuries." Police are still searching for suspects in what may be a gang-related incident.
The officer saw a fight between several boys about 8:45 p.m. near the intersection of 32nd Avenue Southwest and Southwest Raymond Street. The officer attempted to arrest one boy when another boy "started punching him in the face, kicking him in the face and head," Kappel said.
"He was genuinely doing good police work trying to break up a confrontation," Kappel said. "He tried to break up the fight, and they turned on him."
Tony Welch, a neighbor who saw the fight near his townhouse, called 911 and described the fight to dispatchers.
"I was scared for the officer's life," he said. "I was worried about one of them grabbing the cop's gun."
Police say at least three teens were involved -- two 16-year-old boys and a 17-year-old girl.
"He was on the ground trying to fight off three people simultaneously attacking him," Kappel said of the 8-year department veteran. "They were punching him in the head and one of them runs up and kicks him right in the face like a soccer kick."
Welch, who said he was interviewed by gang unit detectives, counted 17 officers who responded to the scene. One of the boys tried to flee on foot, but all three were apprehended. The boys were being held in the Youth Service Center Wednesday night, Kappel said. The girl was released, but will likely face charges.
"This is obviously an unconscionable act," Kappel said. "Anybody that saw any of this or knows who was involved in it -- we want to hear from them."
