EAST PALO ALTO, Calif. — A parolee fatally shot an East Palo Alto police officer three years ago to avoid returning to prison and should be convicted of first-degree murder, a prosecutor told jurors Monday.

Alberto Alvarez, 26, fired three shots at Officer Richard May on Jan. 7, 2006, then "executed him" by standing over the wounded officer and firing a final shot into his head, Steve Wagstaffe, San Mateo County's chief deputy district attorney, told a jury in Redwood City.
