Knife-wielding man attacks Calif. police; suspect fatally shot

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Guadalupe Garcia Sanchez, 53, of Indio, died today after Riverside County deputies said they had to protect themselves from the suicidal man.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department received a call at 3:03 a.m. from a home in the 85000 block of Avenida Maria in Coachella, said Deputy Javier Rodriguez.

Three deputies arrived at the scene, and found Sanchez in the kitchen holding a knife. When deputies approached Sanchez, ordering him to put the knife down, he grabbed another knife and charged toward a deputy with it.

Fearing for their safety, the two other deputies shot Sanchez in an unknown place. Sanchez then tried to stab them with the knife.

Sanchez was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, Rodriguez said.

The two deputies who shot Sanchez were placed on administrative leave due to the department's policy. One deputy has 10 years experience in law enforcement, wheras the other has 2 1/2 years experience under his belt.
