Bulletproof vest saves Chicago officer's life in store stabbing
By Eric Herman
Chicago Sun-Times
CHICAGO, Ill. — A bulletproof vest protected a Chicago Police officer from more than bullets Monday, saving her life when a suspect stabbed her during an arrest, prosecutors said.
The officer, a 50-year-old woman whom authorities would not identify, suffered a "deep stab wound" to her palm, said Assistant State's Attorney Susan Fleming. Rivera tried to stab her in the chest, Fleming said.
"The release of the defendant would pose a real and present threat," Fleming said, asking Boyle to deny bond.
About 10:30 a.m. Monday, Rivera and an accomplice were stealing merchandise from a CVS in the 1700 block of North Sheffield when the officer, who was on duty and in uniform, tried to stop them, Fleming said.
The officer caught Rivera and got one handcuff on her, but Rivera struggled, Fleming said. Rivera allegedly then bit a CVS employee and took a knife out of her pocket and stabbed the officer.
When other officers apprehended her, Rivera told them, " 'You should have busted my head so I can get blood on you and give you what I got. I got AIDS,' " according to Fleming.
Rivera, who appeared in court wearing a shirt that said "Don't Hate Me 'Cause You Ain't Me," has two prior felony convictions for retail theft, Fleming said.
