Bomb found underneath Santa Cruz police car
By Henry K. Lee
San Francisco Chronicle
SANTA CRUZ, Ca. - Someone left a bomb underneath a police car parked outside a Santa Cruz officer's home, a crime that has shocked and puzzled police and federal agents.
It was not clear whether the officer had been specifically targeted or the assailant simply targeted the car. The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the FBI have joined Santa Cruz police in the investigation.
"I want to emphasize that this is a very personal and direct attack," Friend said. "This occurred at the officers' home under a marked vehicle. It's one thing if it happens on a street or out in a public area. It crosses a completely different threshold and a completely different line."
The officer, a 10-year veteran permitted to take a patrol car home, parked the vehicle at about 3 a.m. today after returning home from work, Friend said.
None of the department's 85 employees has reported being threatened, Friend said. Officers are being asked if they have arrested anyone who might hold a personal grudge, he said.
Anyone with information is asked to call Santa Cruz police investigations at (831) 420-5820 or an anonymous tip line at (831) 420-5995.
