N.M. police evacuate stores after bomb threat, standoff
By Raam Wong
The Albuquerque Journal
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The Kmart store on St. Michael's Drive and other commercial and government buildings were evacuated Thursday evening after a man parked nearby said he had a bomb.
A Santa Fe police SWAT team was attempting to negotiate with the man by cell phone late Thursday.
Deputy Police Chief Benji Montaño said he had heard that the man was upset because the state had taken away his child or children.
Scores of police and paramedics vehicles blocked 5th Street between St. Michael's and Siringo Road and cleared the Kmart parking lot.
A Kmart employee said a police officer entered the store at about 7 p.m. and at first told customers to stay put before evacuating the building.
