Ohio officer kills girlfriend, then himself

By Donna J. Miller

CLEVELAND, Ohio — A Cleveland Clinic police officer shot and killed his girlfriend before turning the gun on himself Saturday morning, Parma police say.

Dead are Robert Grzywaczewski, 42, and Mary C. Lyons, 27.

Parma police went to the couple's home at 5715 Onaway Oval at 7 a.m. after receiving a call from the Clinic reporting that Grzywaczewski hadn't shown up for work, Parma Capt. Robert DeSimone said. The patrolmen found an open back door, entered and found the two in a second-floor bedroom dead of gunshot wounds.

Officers found a .40-caliber handgun near the bodies.

Neighbors told police that they heard gunfire about 5:45 a.m. Police had not been called to the home previously, DeSimone said. Onaway Oval is off of Snow Road on the city's northwest side.

Grzywaczewski joined the Clinic's police department 6½ years ago, a hospital spokeswoman said. He was slightly injured while working May 1 when a distraught, mentally ill man cut him with a knife outside a Clinic cancer center on Euclid Avenue.

Grzywaczewski has family in Cleveland, DeSimone said. Lyons' ex-husband and two preschool-age children live in Lake County.

The Cuyahoga County coroner's office will do autopsies today.
