LOS ANGELES — Officials say a Los Angeles police officer may have fallen asleep at the wheel before his cruiser crashed into a semi-truck in South Los Angeles.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the preliminary investigation indicated the cruiser crashed into the illegally parked big-rig at 6 a.m. Thursday.
Police spokesman Jason Lee says the officer and his partner suffered contusions and fractures and were hospitalized in stable condition.
The patrol car hit the trailer and slid underneath it. Firefighters cut the roof off the car to extricate one of the officers.
Sgt. Jerome Calhoun says the officer was likely pulling a graveyard shift from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.
