NYPD going to Abu Dhabi
The Associated Press
NEW YORK — The New York Police Department will soon station a liaison officer in Abu Dhabi, expanding a counterterrorism effort to work with overseas authorities to monitor potential threats against the city.
An NYPD intelligence division officer will "share information and training techniques" with security officials in the Persian Gulf nation, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly told reporters at police headquarters Tuesday.
Kelly said he had signed an agreement last week with Abu Dhabi, part of the United Arab Emirates, that clears the way for an officer to be posted there full-time in the fall.
Since the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, the NYPD has sought to bolster homeland security by redeploying about 1,000 officers to counterterrorism duty here and abroad.
The department already has officers stationed in 10 other spots around the globe: London, Madrid, Paris, Lyon, Singapore, Montreal, Toronto, Santo Domingo, Tel Aviv and Amman, Jordan. A private police foundation has paid for the officers' travel and living expenses.
