A retired city police officer sitting in his car in Brooklyn early yesterday was shot and seriously wounded by his wife, an active city officer who drove up to her husband's car and fired a barrage of bullets, officials said.

Todd Jamison, 43, who retired in January 2005 from a Community Affairs post at Brooklyn's 70th precinct, was sitting in his red late-model Mercedes-Benz at Van Siclen Avenue near Linden Boulevard in East New York at 10 a.m. He had stopped on the way to a nearby bank, officials said.

Officer Alison Jamison, 42, who may have been following her husband, drove up in a silver Chrysler and fired two rounds from her 9-mm service revolver, shattering her passenger side windows, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said. She quickly made a U-turn and fired several more rounds from the driver's side, Kelly said.

Todd Jamison, shot at least four times, was taken to Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center in Brooklyn in serious condition. He was listed in stable condition after afternoon surgery, officials said.

In a matter of hours, police investigating the incident tracked down Alison Jamison, a 12-year police veteran, at a Budget rental car facility at Newark Liberty Airport, officials said.

She was being held yesterday awaiting extradition to New York, and had not been interviewed by police because she requested an attorney, officials said.

She was being held in connection with the shooting, but as of last night had not been charged, officials said.

A police official speaking on condition of anonymity, said a friend of the Staten Island couple, in the wife's car at the airport, told police the wife spoke to her of marital problems and being depressed.

It was not clear if Jamison was trying to fly out of the airport, but the Chrysler was a rental car, the police official said.
