Source: Undercover cop took part in SUV attack

The undercover officer, who was off-duty at the time, has been placed on modified duty

NEW YORK — An officer who told investigators he had no part in last week’s attack on a Manhattan SUV driver by a group of bikers was allegedly caught taking part in the beating.

The undercover officer, who was off-duty at the time, has been placed on modified duty and turned in his gun and badge, according to the New York Post.

“I think we all, no matter what your job is, have an obligation to help one another,’’ Mayor Bloomberg said on MSNBC’s ‘Morning Joe’ in response to questioning about the officer’s actions. “And if you see somebody getting beaten up, you know, let’s go jump in and stop the fight.”

Police are still searching for two more men suspected in taking part in the attack.

One of the bikers, Craig Wright of Brooklyn, was arraigned Tuesday and held on $100,000 bail, according to the report.

Prosecutors have declined to press charges against a second suspect, Allen Edwards, who allegedly punched the driver’s side rear window of the SUV before the suspect was beaten.

The internal investigation into the officer is ongoing.
