Police, Secret Service Investigate Counterfeit $100 Bills in Md

Officials describe money as 'high quality'

The Baltimore Sun

Ocean City, Mary. police and the U.S. Secret Service are investigating the passing last week of at least seven counterfeit $100 bills at stores in the resort.

Police said the fake bills were reported Thursday night at grocery and convenience stores, and described them as "high quality" but with subtle differences from real currency.

Police said that the number 100 on the fake bills had a bluish color compared with the gold-colored 100 on authentic bills and that the watermark had a cartoonlike appearance.

In each case, a man who appeared to be Middle Eastern and had a heavy accent entered convenience and grocery stores in the city, made a small purchase and attempted to pay with a $100 bill, police said.

Police did not say whether the attempts were successful.

A white 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis with Ohio tags occupied by the man and another male was seen leaving the stores' parking lots, police said.

Anyone with information was asked to call the Ocean City Police Investigation Division at 410-723-6604.
