Competence in Sexual Assault Investigations

In a sexual assault investigation the law enforcement investigator’s mental approach should be to determine if a crime was or wasn’t committed. One of the major aspects of determining if a crime was committed and by whom, is the competence of the law enforcement sexual assault investigator. Therefore, the law enforcement investigator must demonstrate at all times that he/she are competent in all aspects of the sexual assault investigation and forensic interviews. Most sexual assaults are can be complex. The investigator must then obtain the necessary education, training, and experience in order to be competent in conducting a sexual assault investigation. The investigator can follow investigative protocols and procedures in order to properly and lawfully perform their investigative duties and responsibilities. The investigator’s credibility as a law enforcement officer will be questioned if the investigative process is not followed. If the credibility and reliability of the investigator’s competence is questionable then a sexual offender may be released back into the community and/or an innocent person can be sent to jail/prison for a crime he/she didn’t commit. Interrogation in Sexual Assault Investigations

In a sexual assault investigation the law enforcement investigator’s mental approach should be to determine if a crime was or wasn’t committed. One of the major aspects of determining if a crime was committed and by whom, is the interrogation process of the sexual offender. Therefore, the law enforcement investigator must perform the sexual assault investigation, identify, apprehend, and interrogation the alleged sexual offender. The investigator must then follow investigative interrogation protocols and procedures in order to properly and lawfully interrogate the alleged sexual offender. The investigators credibility as a law enforcement officer will be questioned if the investigative interrogation process is not followed. If the credibility and reliability of the interrogation is questionable then a sexual offender may be released back into the community and/or an innocent person can be sent to jail/prison for a crime he/she didn’t commit.
