 Dear P1 Member,

Everyone knows PoliceOne's Dave "JD Buck Savage" Smith as a great trainer and author, but did you know that he was an early champion of women in law enforcement? In this month's eNews, Dave discusses the power of self talk and how he changed his academy's firearms program 30 years ago to empower female recruits to succeed.

I talk about the difficulty of balancing a career in law enforcement with the rest of our busy lives, something many of us struggle with. We also provide some tips for accessing your own career. This is one of our best issues ever, and I hope you'll share it with all the women (and the men) in your organization! Stay safe!

In our leadership classes for women, we always start by asking students to take a few minutes a do a "career self assessment." It's nothing fancy, it's just a quick way to internally check in and ask a few pertinent questions. What do I want?
