Dear P1 Member,

Ever wonder where women fit into the ranks of American police officers? We are approximately 15% of sworn police officers; 9% of those are sergeants, 6% are lieutenants, 3% are captains, 4% of them are above the rank of captain and there are over 215 female police chiefs in the United States. We must continue to network with and mentor each other, and we need to work together with our brothers and sisters to reduce the rising number of police officer murders in this nation and beyond.

Fitness is essential to officer survival, and in this issue we welcome PoliceOne Academy expert Officer Kathleen Vonk, who gives us functional fitness tips and information that women in law enforcement can truly use to improve both their performance and their health. I also have the privilege of introducing you to Officer Brandy Roell, who truly embodies a winning mindset long after she was shot multiple times in a life-changing incident just thirty days after graduating from the police academy. Her story is as inspiring as it is compelling. We look forward to your feedback, and in the meantime, stay safe!

Check to see if your body armor really fits
By Sgt. Betsy Brantner Smith, P1 Columnist
Our bodies change and so does our gear; if you’ve lost or gained weight, started using a new duty belt, or made some other change, that may affect how your vest fits.
