Dear PoliceOne Member,

Two cops have been killed in the 48 hours since the release of a report that said police deaths rose 37 percent in 2010. Today’s news lineup includes a story that asks if "weak penalties" are to blame for that rise. It focuses on the release of a man who, after getting out of jail for the 18th time two weeks ago, fatally shot Trooper Chadwick LeCroy in the neck during a Monday traffic stop.

If you believe weak penalties do bear part of the blame, you might also be interested in the upcoming parole of Michael Alston, a man who shot and killed NYPD Sgt. Keith Richard Levine 29 years ago. Read the story and see how you can prevent his release.
