20 years for Chicago man who shot at officers
By Art Barnum
The Chicago Tribune
CHICAGO — A Burr Ridge man who fired a volley of bullets at police officers trying to question him about a stolen bicycle pleaded guilty Monday to aggravated discharge of a firearm and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Jonathon Rossi, 31, was originally charged with attempted first-degree murder of the Burr Ridge officers outside his parents' garage in the 10S500 block of Glen Drive. But that charge was dropped Monday as part of a plea agreement. The incident took place Oct. 3, 2005.
DuPage County Assistant State's Atty. Ann Celine O'Hallaren told Judge Kathryn Creswell that several officers went to the home to question Rossi about a bicycle that he claimed he had bought for $10 from a landscaper.
Rossi became agitated and combative with police, stating he didn't want to talk to them and closed the garage door. The officers heard several shots and sought cover, O'Hallaren said.
No one was injured.
After Rossi was arrested, he claimed he never shot at the officers but wanted to hit a family car because of a family argument. Five bullets were recovered, including one in the car, one in an outer wall of a neighboring home and the others in his parents' home.
Frank Scarpino, Rossi's attorney, told Creswell that he had considered arguing an insanity defense at Rossi's scheduled September trial, but his client accepted the plea agreement. Scarpino told Creswell that his client's current mental condition wasn't an issue.
Court records indicate that Rossi had been homeless before the 2005 shooting incident.
