Two face charges in assaults on Maine officers
By Doug Harlow
The Portland Press Herald (Maine)
SOMERSET COUNTY, Maine — Two Somerset County sheriff's deputies said they were assaulted over the weekend - one by a dog, the other by the operator of an all-terrain vehicle. The incidents resulted in a pair of arrests.
About 10 p.m. Sunday, Madison police were searching for a vehicle on Lakewood Road, a section of Route 201, Detective Lt. Carl Gottardi said.
Deputy Richie Putnam questioned Charles Nickerson, 56, of Madison, who was stopped on an all-terrain vehicle by the side of the road.
''Basically, the person gave him what (Putnam) believed to be a phony name and refused to tell him who he was,'' Gottardi said. ''He said some profanities to him and tried to leave the area on the four-wheeler.''
''Deputy Putnam had held onto his arm to restrain him and (Nickerson) reportedly gunned the engine and turned the four-wheeler into the deputy and tried to hit him.''
Putnam used his Taser to try to subdue Nickerson, who ran over the deputy's left leg, police said. Putnam was knocked to the ground and Nickerson drove to his nearby home, where he was later arrested, Gottardi said.
Nickerson was charged with felony assault on a police officer, refusing to submit to arrest, failure to stop for a police officer and refusing to give his correct name to police. He also was charged with a civil infraction of operating an ATV on a public way.
Putnam did not require medical attention, Gottardi said.
In the second incident, Dana Clark, 42, of Starks, was arrested in North Anson about 8:20 p.m. Friday.
Reserve Deputy Zack Logiodice was patrolling the area of Route 234 and Holland Weight Hill Road when he came upon a vehicle by the side of the road with its hazard lights on, Gottardi said.
A passerby told the deputy that Clark, the driver, appeared intoxicated and had jumped into his car demanding a ride, Gottardi said.
Clark apparently had gone home, and reappeared with a dog on a chain, Gottardi said. Clark allegedly banged his fists on the window of the cruiser.
When Logiodice tried to arrest Clark on a charge of disorderly conduct, he set the dog free and it ''attacked the deputy and bit him three times in his left calf and inner thigh,'' Gottardi said.
''The dog had to be Maced - which does not hurt the animal - and it immediately took off,'' he said. ''Mr. Clark was Maced, as well.''
Logiodice was treated at a local hospital for the bites.
Clark was charged with felony assault on a police officer, disorderly conduct and refusing to submit to arrest. He was taken to the county jail.
The dog was checked out by animal control.
