BASTROP, Texas — The Bastrop County Sheriff’s Department has released dash cam showing police help residents during a deadly wildfire.
Officers went door-to-door — directly in the path of the September fire, one of the state's largest in recent years — to warn residents of the threat, according to told KVUE. In the video, officers are seen extinguishing fires on the roadside as smoke and flames billow.
“My hat goes off to all my folks," Sheriff Pickering said. "I mean, they did an absolutely tremendous job that day.”
The fire killed two people and destroyed more than 1,500 homes, making a lasting impression on the Bastrop community. Evacuations were lifted in early October.
"It was something that people won't forget for a long time," Pickering said.
Police will continue to examine the footage over the next few months to consider what the department might have done differently.
“There's obviously going to be a lot of lessons learned through all of this as would any other incident," Pickering said. "You go back and review and say, 'Okay what could we do better?'"
