Video of police arresting ASU professor goes viral

A struggle ensued when the professor refused to show her ID or comply with any of the officer's requests

TEMPE, Ariz. — Dash cam video of a woman being arrested for jaywalking and refusing to cooperate with ASU campus police has been released.

Professor Ersula Ore was stopped in May for jaywalking down the middle of a street in Tempe, according to NY Daily News, by Officer Stewart Ferrin.

While explaining that she was jaywalking because of ongoing construction, Ferrin asked for the woman’s ID, prompting the woman — an English professor at ASU — to resist, saying she didn’t like the ‘disrespectful’ way she was being spoken to.

"Let me see your ID or you will be arrested for failing to provide ID," Ferrin is heard saying on dash cam.

A scuffle ensued, and Ore was taken to the ground to be arrested.

According to the report, when Ore was being picked back up, she kicked an officer in the shin.

She faces charges of assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, refusing to provide identification when requested to do so by an officer and obstructing a highway or public thoroughfare.

ASU released a statement saying an internal investigation determined the officers did nothing wrong.

"ASU authorities have reviewed the circumstances surrounding the arrest and have found no evidence of inappropriate actions by the ASUPD officers involved," it said.
