Pa. officer rescues woman from burning home

An Evans City police officer rescued a woman from the second floor of a burning house in Forward, Butler County, early Wednesday as flames shot through the roof.

Sgt. Don Myers and several police officers from neighboring municipalities were the first to arrive at the home in the 1100 block of Three Degree Road about 2 a.m.

"It was a big fire," Myers said. "The house sits on top of a hill, and you could see it from about four miles away."

The woman, who was not identified, was trapped on the second floor and called for help from a window.

"She started yelling, and a neighbor said he had a ladder, which he went to get" said Myers, an Evans City police officer since 1994 and a former volunteer firefighter.

After Myers and others told the woman to push out the window screen, Myers climbed up the ladder and carried her down.

"She was very worked up. She had no slippers on," Myers said. "So she needed help getting down the ladder."

Initially, there was confusion about whether anyone was inside the house.

"The home's owner travels a lot, and there was no car in the driveway," Myers said. "Many neighbors thought no one was home."

Myers said he and others acted quickly. "There were two propane tanks just outside the house," he said.

By the time firefighters arrived, the house was fully engulfed, said Evans City fire Capt. Mark Adomaitis. Firefighters rescued a dog and a cat from the house, he said.

The woman "got out right before we got there, so we feel lucky about that," fire Chief Scott Jamison said.

Jamison said he believes the fire, which started in the basement or first floor, was accidental. No cause had been identified yesterday.

About 30 firefighters from six departments - Evans City, Connoquenessing, Meridian, Penn Township, Mars and Valencia - spent about five hours on the scene.
