Bullets did not pierce the body armor of Trooper J.C. Horniak when he was
shot Monday during a traffic stop, an N.C. Highway Patrol spokesman said.
"It stopped one bullet that struck him directly in the sternum," Lt. Everett
Clendenin said Wednesday. "We're convinced now even more that this vest
saved his life."
Horniak was shot by a motorist he pulled over Monday morning. Three bullets
entered his chest area, according to surgeons at Cape Fear Valley Medical
Center, and one hit him in the leg.
Clendenin said the bullets hit places that were not protected by his vest.
