Mayor gets calls from around the US about police video

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, facing possibly one of the biggest crises of his 2-year-old administration, said Thursday he has received calls from people throughout the nation interested in being part of his blue-ribbon panel to assess the culture and sensitivity within the city Police Department.

Newsom said he is carefully considering who to appoint to the panel, which he announced Wednesday he would form in the wake of the discovery that about 20 police officers were involved in producing videos that he and Police Chief Heather Fong say mock minorities and treat women as sex objects.

Newsom had not yet chosen anyone Thursday, and he did not indicate whether he would choose people from outside San Francisco.
