WELLFORD, S.C. — A Spartanburg County sheriff's deputy and a suspect he was chasing have died in a shootout following a traffic stop, officials said early Wednesday.

Deputy Kevin Carper, 39, was struck by a single gunshot to the chest and died late Tuesday night, Sheriff Chuck Wright said.

Carper had pulled over Terry Lee Brooks, of Inman, near the junction of Interstate 85 and state Highway 129 on Tuesday night. Brooks got out of his vehicle and began to run and Carper and another officer followed him. Brooks shot at Carper, who returned fire, Wright said. ...
